  • measuring spoons
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • baking sheets
  • parchment paper
  • wire rack

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water about 110°F
  • 1 packet active dry yeast 2 1/4 teaspoons

Shaping and Decoration

  • 1/4 cup slivered almonds
  • red gel food coloring

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Pour in yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should spring back slowly when pressed.
  • Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Punch down dough and divide into 20 equal pieces.
  • Roll each piece into a thin 8-inch rope, tapering one end to resemble a finger. Press one slivered almond into the tapered end to create a fingernail.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes until crisp and lightly golden. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Use red gel food coloring for the best 'bloody' effect. Let dough rise in a warm place for best results.
