Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp fine sea salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened at room temperature
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp purple gel food coloring

For Rolling

  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar for rolling
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar for rolling

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, and fine sea salt. This blend ensures even leavening in your cookies.
  • In a large bowl, use a hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment to beat the softened butter and 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar on medium-high speed for 3 to 4 minutes, until the mixture is light, fluffy, and pale in color. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract and purple gel food coloring, until the batter is a smooth, even violet shade.
  • Reduce the mixer speed to low and gradually add the dry ingredients, mixing just until no streaks of flour remain and a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
  • Place 1/2 cup granulated sugar in one shallow bowl and 1/2 cup powdered sugar in another. Scoop dough by the rounded tablespoon, roll into a smooth ball, then roll first in the granulated sugar, then generously in the powdered sugar until heavily coated. Place the dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake one sheet at a time in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, just until the cookies have puffed, the tops have crinkled, and the edges are lightly set. The centers will look soft; they will firm up as they cool.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes to set, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. They will develop their signature crinkled, crackled appearance as they cool.

Notes

The centers will look soft when they come out of the oven; they will firm up as they cool and develop their signature crinkled appearance.
