Equipment

  • large skillet
  • wooden spoon
  • baking sheet
  • oven
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • measuring spoons
  • measuring cups

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 1 small yellow onion finely chopped
  • 1 can (8 ounce) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown 1 pound of ground beef with the finely chopped onion, breaking the meat up with a wooden spoon until it is fully cooked and no pink remains, which should take about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  • Stir in the 8-ounce can of tomato sauce, 1/2 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon mustard, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon onion powder until all the ingredients are fully combined.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  • While the mixture simmers, preheat your oven's broiler on high and arrange the 8 hot dog buns on a large baking sheet.
  • Spoon the warm meat mixture evenly into the open buns, then top each one generously with the shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Place the baking sheet under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly. Serve immediately.

Notes

Watch the broiler closely to prevent the buns from burning while the cheese melts.
