Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • hand mixer
  • oven
  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • spatula
  • whisk
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • wire rack

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs at room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour spooned and leveled
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder sifted if lumpy
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with a thin layer of butter or non-stick cooking spray, then line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal. This will help you get clean, intact brownies to cut into shapes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, use a hand mixer on medium speed to beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together for about 2 minutes, until the mixture is light and fluffy, which will help create a good crumb.
  • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in the vanilla extract until just combined. The batter will look smooth and glossy.
  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add these dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until no streaks of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix. Fold in the chocolate chips with a spatula.
  • Pour the thick batter into your prepared pan. Use the spatula to spread it into an even layer, reaching all corners. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached (not wet batter).
  • Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack, about 2 hours.
  • Once cool, use the parchment paper to lift the whole slab out of the pan. Use a sharp knife to cut the brownies into squares, then carefully cut each square diagonally to create triangles. To form hearts, arrange two brownie triangles with the points touching to create the bottom of the heart, and the cut edges forming the top curves.

Notes

For a polished look, you can gently press the triangles together at the center point.
