Equipment

  • oven
  • baking sheet
  • electric mixer
  • spatula
  • whisk
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • wire rack

Ingredients

Cookie Dough

  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened to room temperature
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until fully combined. Beat in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed just until the flour disappears and a soft dough forms.
  • Use a sturdy spoon or spatula to fold in the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  • Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading.
  • Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers look set.
  • Remove the baking sheets from the oven and let the cookies cool directly on the sheets for 5 minutes to firm up. Then, transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For softer cookies, bake for the shorter time. Letting them cool on the baking sheet helps them set.
